Nexus Jiu-Jitsu

Nexus is about Connection

Coach james

I am a full-time special education teacher with 19 years in jiu-jitsu and 14 years of teaching experience. My journey in martial arts began with Tae Kwon Do in my childhood, and I started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2006. As a lifelong martial artist, I earned my black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Yousef Alirezaei in 2018 after 12 years of training. I am a second degree black belt.

Yousef's lineage traces back through Allen Mohler, Romero Cavalcanti, Rolls Gracie, Helio Gracie, Carlos Gracie Senior., and finally to Mitsuyo Maeda.

Coach Jill

Coach Jill is also a full time special education teacher. She began training Judo in college and is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master at first degree black belt. She earned her black belt in 2023 from Orlando Waugh.

Orlando Waugh's lineage traces back through Carlos Machado, Carlos Gracie Junior,   Carlos Gracie Senior, and finally to Mitsuyo Maeda.

Coaching style

I create an encouraging, positive environment where people feel supported and challenged to grow. I’ve been coaching kids and adults since 2012, and I love helping others build confidence, sharpen their skills, and reach their goals. I meet each person where they are, celebrate progress, and push them toward their full potential.

What makes nexus Jiu-Jitsu different?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a Grappling Art

What is Jiu-Jitsu?:
Jiu-Jitsu is a form of martial arts used in MMA (UFC, etc.) which focuses on controlling and incapacitating an opponent on the ground. It contains no punching, kicking, or any other type of striking.

History:
Mitsuyo Maeda introduced judo to Brazil in 1914. The ground portion of judo is called "Newaza," which means "ground technique." Mitsuyo Maeda's Brazilian students, such as Carlos Gracie and Luiz França, focused heavily on the ground technique of Judo, and continued to improve upon it. It came to be known as its own style: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ.

Gym Environment and Class Format

Environment:
I strive to maintain an environment that is safe, friendly, clean, and competitive. I want everybody to be comfortable mentally so they can train hard physically.

Class Format:
Warm up
Technique
Positional Drilling
Live Rolling (Grappling)
Game (for kids)

Nexus Means Connection

I chose the name "Nexus" for my BJJ gym because a thriving gym acts as a central hub, connecting people of all kinds. Jiu-Jitsu gyms often evolve into tight-knit communities, providing a space where we can momentarily disconnect from the outside world. Additionally, Jiu-Jitsu fosters long-term fitness goals, connecting us to a healthier lifestyle.

Nexus Means Connection

I chose "Nexus" because I've seen that a healthy gym operates as a sort of hub which connects people of all kinds. Jiu-Jitsu gyms tend to turn into small communities of their own, in a place where we can separate from the outside world for a short time. Jiu-Jitsu also connects many of us to long-term fitness goals.
